Haiti Medical Mission: day 10
Day 10- Thursday march 25th
Even though I took a nice shower and towelled myself with water before putting on my scrub, I start sweating as I go down the hill. By the time I see my first patient, I got sweat dripping between my shoulder blades. By the end of the day, my clothes are usually sticking to me and it feels very good to put on shorts. There are two places in the clinic where we have air conditioning: the pharmacy (because the meds need to be at a certain temperature) and the operating room because the surgeons have to put on gowns and work really hard.
You know how they say “be careful what you wish for, you might just get it!” well, my first consultation was for a woman who said she was eight months pregnant and was having lower belly and back pains. As she was huffing and puffing, I checked and she was having small contractions. She was expecting her fourth child. I was almost disappointed when I checked her cervix and found it to be closed and the baby to be high. She decided to stick around in case her real labour started but eventually went back home, still pregnant.
We ended the day by doing a transfer to Miami’s hospital tents near the airport. It was quite cool to see that the doctors were Canadians.
