Haiti Medical Mission: day 8
Day 8- Tuesday march 23rd
Today was a regular day with a lot of people at the clinic. I heard there was kind of a riot when people tried to cut the line but everyone had calmed down when they came to my office. I saw many pregnant women, some of them were bleeding but since I could hear the baby’s heart I told them to go home and rest. I don’t know how much resting they can do since they live in a tent and need to walk long distances to get water.
When questioned, many women reported having lost babies from unexplained fever. The diseases that are most common here are: malnutrition, dehydration, malaria, hepatitis A, B and C, AIDS, typhoid fever, common cold, intestinal parasites and all kinds of fungal infections among others.
The most important problem is obviously poverty and the need for sanitary education.
